we in same situation.

the terminated employee has control of domain name , office 365 account. know need go after domain registration company control of domain.  need admin control of our office 365 account?

hello bob,

as have understood correctly, need control on admin account in o365 being handled old administrator. achieve, should either have 1 user has @ least helpdesk rbac role assigned can login portal.office.com & can reset password of administrator. 

from onward, can login using admin username , changed password , able control. 

else in case if want make changes in domain registrar well, nothing able do, can stop emails making changes mx, if want current admin (who no longer associated) should not receive emails, depends on scenario. 

rest make changes in exchange admin center, have have admin rights make changes domain. 

i hope able decide next need , reply, try best provide best possible resolution.
