VLOOKUP and #VALUE error - Microsoft Community

i using vlookup decode 6 digit assay code , fill cell name of study. formula working except discovered table missing 1 assay code. added assay code relevant information , #value in cell instead of name of study.

i did not create original workbook user not sophisticated user of excel and, far can tell, list of assays , names simple sheet within workbook.

so, question is, why has addition of 1 assay code in "protocolnature of study" worksheet messed formula? has else experienced this?

my formula is:

=vlookup(s2,'protocolnature of study'!$a$2:$d$697,4,false)

all gratefully received,

jane

in vlookup says:

less 1, vlookup returns #value! error value.

this means if 3rd argument less one.    defines no other condition vlookup return #value error.

that tell me have #value error in table in column d.
