well, it’s simple mathematics here. in excel, underlying value stored in decimal form. so, if you’ve used number formatting display percentage (10%), that’s formatting, or symbolic representation of underlying value. excel performs calculations on underlying value, decimal (0.1).

 

• format existing values: when apply percentage formatting cell has number in it, excel multiplies number 100 , adds % sign @ end. let’s type 10 cell a2, , apply percentage number format. because excel multiples number 100 show percentage (remember 1% 1 part of 1 hundred), you’ll see 1000% displayed in cell, not 10%.

 

• format empty cells: excel behaves differently when pre-format empty cells percentage formatting , enter numbers. numbers equal , larger 1 converted percentages default; numbers smaller 1 not preceded 0 multiplied 100 convert them percentages. example, if type 10 or .1 in preformatted cell, you’ll see 10%appear in cell.

 

• format type: if type 10% directly in cell, excel automatically apply percentage formatting.
