I can't save my Excel Workbook - Office 2016 for Mac - Microsoft Community

i'm using excel mac 15.40.  can't save file without getting message: 

cannot access read-only document.  (when try "save as" on top of existing file)

 or one:

the document saved successfully, excel cannot re-open because of sharing violation.  please close document , try open again.

i started having issue when updated office mac 2016, required because updated os 10.13.1 high sierra

reply different question reminded me having forbidden characters in name of startup volume can cause sorts of grief. sure name of startup volume has letters , numbers.
