on upgrading from office 2013 to office 365 - Microsoft Community

existing files, mail contacts spreadsheets automatically transfer?

assuming installing 365 on same computer, yes "automatically transfer".

when install office 365, prompt permission uninstall older versions of office applications on computer.  "soft" uninstall. office designed 2 types of uninstall process.

the "soft" 1 deletes program files , most, not of registry entries.  not touch "personal" configuration files word "normal.dotm" outlook pst file , configuration related registry entries.

this soft uninstall serves 2 purposes. allows users soft uninstall , re-install office part of trouble shooting process.  second, makes "upgrades" painless. new version picks existing configuration information user sees of personalizations in new install (what asking about).

the "hard" uninstall requires run "fix it" script downloaded ms. uninstall nukes related office install. allows "clean install" if soft uninstall not fix problems during trouble shooting.

your personal data file documents , spreadsheets stored in directory not touched either type of uninstall. still there in same place use when install complete.

if paranoid, before doing serious hard drive work, such application upgrade, first full image copy backup of existing setup.  way, in unlikely change goes wrong "upgrade" can go "known good" setup.
