Error when closing Excel 2002 with Win 8.1 64 bit - Microsoft Community

i'm running excel 2002 sp3 under win 8.1.  when program first installed ran , closed no errors.  some time later, perhaps after win 8.1 update, excel cannot closed without error.

even if file closed before attempting close excel still error.  when problem reporting settings set "automatically check solutions"  the error "microsoft excel has stopped working" .  excel restarted , shows list of recovered files (all of had been closed in previous sessions of excel)

if problem reporting set "never check solutions" closing excel results in "stopped working" error , option debug.  if debug selected "an unhandled win32 exception occurred in excel.exe [7164]" reported.

why closing excel result in unhandled exception , how fix this?

 (please not advise me update later version of excel.  this version meets current needs , did not throw exception when installed on computer).
